No body argues that the opposition political parties and the Juba conference powers have the right to appear on the official mass media to express their views about their electoral agendas. The General Election Commission has anticipated raising of arguments over such issue and established a mechanism to render equal opportunities for all political parties to express their views on the public media. And if any political candidate feels that he did not get his opportunity on public mass media, he must lodge a complaint. The opposition forces demand of equal opportunity on public mass media is normal, but the strangest thing was the opposition demonstration and the unjustifiable language of threats. They could go to the General Election Commission and initiate a conversation on the issue or lodge a complaint over it. Such acts could also send Sudanese voters a message on the communication and negotiation protocols and good conflict management. However, the leaders of Juba conference forces have left the Sudanese voters with no choice but to remember the English proverb that the empty barrel makes the greatest sound. It is unfortunate to say that those who submitted their lengthy memo to the General Election Commission were able to make their own means and establish their own media organs as the public mass media are not the sole means for election campaigning as the conduct of the elections was agreed upon in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005.
Launching of demonstrations is not the appropriate solution in this particular time because it gives the voters an indication that those candidates are weak and not trustworthy. Probably, the purpose of the this stance, which makes the supporters of those powers feel ashamed, is to undermine the election process and create a state of chaos in order to give pre excuses about their expected failure in the election. |
